47th Annual Whitney M. Young Jr. Awards Dinner

This year’s 2011 honorees for the Greater Phoenix Urban League's 47th Annual Whitney M. Young Jr. Award Dinner were Mark D. Breen, President and CEO of Atlantic Development & Investments Inc., as the recipient of the Individual Award and St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center as the receiver of the Corporate Award.

Each year the Greater Phoenix Urban League holds an annual dinner to celebrate the legacy of Whitney M. Young Jr. (1921 – 1971), an American civil rights leader, who spent most of his career dedicated to ending employment discrimination in the United States.  Whitney M. Young Jr. was the driving force behind the transformation of the National Urban League from a relatively passive civil rights organization into one that actively fought for equitable access to socioeconomic opportunity for the historically disenfranchised.

The award ceremony was held of Friday, May 13, 2011 at the Westin Kierland Resort in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Letters of Commendation

“Every man is our brother, and every man’s burden is our own. Where poverty exists, all are poorer. Where hate flourishes, all are corrupted. Where injustice reins, all are unequal.”
 – Whitney M. Young Jr.
